Parent Communication
It is important to establish good parent communication from the first day of school. I have found the more ways I use to maintain parent communication the more parents I am able to establish and maintain communication with. I keep parents updated with their student’s academic progress, classroom behavior, and classroom content. I provide parents with resources to help their students.
Examples of Parent Communication:
Phone Calls/Emails/Letters
Friday Folders: used to send home classroom papers at the end of the week, tests/quizzes, progress reports, newsletters, and any other important information, I tape the sheet parents sign to the front of a pocket folder, one side is for test/quizzes that need to be returned and one side is for papers to keep at home
Newsletters: weekly/monthly newsletters to keep parents updated on what students are learning
Study Guides: important information on upcoming tests and study tips, usually for science and social studies when I teach upper grades
Homework Chart/Planner: parents sign planers each night and are able to write quick notes for daily communication
DRA Graph: parents are able to see their child’s DRA growth and where their child is in relation to grade level reading
Parent Reading Survey: used at the beginning of the year to help learn about the child and his family as readers
Please Help Me to Get to Know Your Child: used at the beginning of the year to get to know students and their family, I have had very positive responses from parents using this and surprised how much they are willing to share
Behavior/Academic Contract: used for some students, when students met their goals they earn stickers
